Drying and Atterberg limits of Cochin marine clay

Title: Drying and Atterberg limits of Cochin marine clay
Authors: Amal, Azad Sahib
Abstract: Marine clays are reported to undergo an irreversible change in plasticity on drying. Various reasons such
as the presence of halloysite and allophane minerals that change their structure, the presence of sesquioxides or organic matter that undergo cementation and the presence of salinity that generates strong
attractive forces leading to aggregation on drying have been reported. In this study, the properties of
Cochin marine clay, obtained from Cochin, India, in air-dried and oven-dried conditions were evaluated.
The study shows that the plasticity characteristics get altered on drying, but can be reversed by proper
dispersion using dispersion tools.

A review of isotache modeling and secondary consolidation behavior of soft clays

Title: A review of isotache modeling and secondary consolidation behavior of soft clays
Authors: Amal, Azad Sahib
Abstract: Secondary consolidation of soils has gained much importance as a major contributor
in the long term settlements of soft clays. In the scenario where constructions on such
problematic soils are increasing, accurate prediction of long term settlements is very
challenging. This paper reviews the evolution of the secondary compression characteristics
from the concept of Cα to the creep isotaches. The generation of the 3 D elastic viscoplastic
model from the equivalent time (isotache) approach is also discussed in this paper. This model
is an extension of Maxwell’s rheological model. With relevance to Indian soils, the secondary
compression characteristics of Kuttanad and Cochin marine clay are also reported in this paper.

Evaluation of Various Electrode Configurations in Electro-Osmosis

Title: Evaluation of Various Electrode Configurations in Electro-Osmosis
Authors: Amal, Azad Sahib
Abstract: Electro-Osmosis technology is a proven stabilization technique on fine-grained soils. When an electric field is
applied to a mass of soil, the pore fluid moves from the region of anode to cathode along with the positive ions that
move towards the negative electrode; the net effect being reduced water content and improved strength near the
region of anode. From an elementary study, it was established that copper and its alloys form the best electrode
material for electro-osmosis and that a uniform increase of resistance in soil during the process increases the
efficiency of the process. Usually, application of this technique on field does not follow any particular configuration
of electrodes. In this study, different patterns of arrangement of a set of four electrodes were implemented to study
the effects of each of the arrangement. It was found that a tetrahedral configuration using one central anode and
three cathodes resulted in better drainage of water by 33% whereas that with a central cathode and three anodes
resulted in better improvement of strength by 76%.

Electro-osmosis: A review from the past

Title: Electro-osmosis: A review from the past
Authors: Amal, Azad Sahib
Abstract: Electro-osmosis is a powerful technique, as a means of dewatering soils of high compressibility and moisture
content. Electro-osmosis is an established technique and has been investigated by many researchers as long as a
century ago.
The treatment factors that contribute to the effectiveness of electro-osmotic consolidation are: type of electrode,
voltage gradient, polarity reversal, current intermittence, and duration of treatment. Copper, mild steel and stainless
steel in different shapes and forms have been used as electrodes. Electrokineticgeosynthetics (EKG) used in
electro-osmotic consolidation applications provide electrokinetic function in addition to the filtration and drainage
functions. The EKG electrodes are less susceptible to corrosion due to the polymeric cover or treatment against
corrosion. Even though most studies claim the effectiveness of this technique, the procedure is not widely accepted
in the industry due to the risks and costs involved. This paper aims to review the suitability of this technique on soils
around the world. Also, this paper looks closely into the properties of the soil that make it ideal for the success of this
technique. With reference to Indian soils, the results of electro-osmosis studies on Kuttanad clay, are presented
